The Navajo traditional lands (and, to a large extent, the current Navajo
Nation) is bordered by 4 sacred mountains. Each represents a point of the
compass and one of the 4 worlds the people passed through on their way to
this land. Each one is represented by a color. North is Black, the First
World, and Mt. Hesperus. South is Turquoise, the Second World, and
Mt. Taylor. West is Yellow, the Third World, and the San Francisco Peak.
East is White, the Fourth World, and La Blanca Peak. This is Mt. Hesperus,
just north of Mesa Verde.
